“Johnnie Taylor is Gone”
Presented by Aquarian Rising Productions
Written by Gregory S. Carr
Directed by Thomasina Clarke.
$15 in advance and $20 at the door
Synopsis:
The Golden Zodiac Lounge is a place of contradictions. It boasts of its heritage of the past, but stubbornly resists preparing for the future. It wants to reach out to a larger clientele, but is hesitant to embrace what that entails. The owner, Will Strong and his other friends in the bar spend time philosophizing over the state of Black America with topics ranging from sports and music, to politics and religion. This “Old School” bar is governed by an old jukebox, which serves as a “chorus” for the play. Each character has a song on the jukebox to whom he or she identifies. The conflict begins when a young “Thundercat” in the neighborhood named Jiggy wants to buy the bar and change it into a hip-hop club; facilitating a generational clash. The Golden Zodiac is a place where Johnnie Taylor is king and Koko Taylor is queen in this two-act comedy.
